Conditions before Stem Cell Transplantation for Type 1 Diabetes
Miss Yan, an 18 years old patient from China, suffered from type 1 diabetes mellitus.Before receiving therapy, Miss Yan’s blood level has shown stablecondition.
Fasting plasma glucose leveled at 6.7mmol/L to 9.4mmol/L, postprandial blood glucose leveled at 6.2mmol/L to 9.4mmol/L, but glycosylated hemoglobin indicated a high level of 11.6. Such indication has shown non-controlled blood glucose over the past three months. During the beginning of admission, Miss Yan’s eyelids and feet showed notable swelling. She has poor mental condition. She was troubled with frequent fatigue. Type B ultrasound examination on her abdomen showed abdominal dropsy.
Miss Yan took 26 Units of insulin daily for controlling blood glucose.

Before dinner: 5 Units
Before bedtime: 12 Units

Conditions after Stem Cell Transplantation for Type 1 Diabetes
Miss Yan’s condition has shown overall improvement. After completing stem cells therapy, patient daily insulin intake has reduced to 18 Units. She felt more energetic as symptoms reducing (relieving may be better than reducing). Data indicated stable blood glucose. Eyelid’s swelling and edema in feet disappeared.
Following Up Condition
Three months after her discharge, Miss Yan has received excellent feedback on her condition. She has completely stopped insulin injection. With diet control and exercise, she goes well with her blood glucose now.
