Conditions before Stem Cell Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Miss Thilaga is a 13-year female from India, suffered from Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus for more than 3 years. She had a complicated and unstable blood glucose level. Before receiving cell-based gene therapy, Miss Thilaga had to inject 42 units of Insulin per day, 28 units of Insulin at morning and 14 units of Insulin at evening. Although she was receiving a high amount of insulin injection, her fasting blood glucose was 12.8 mmol/L ~ 18.3 mmol/L and her postprandial blood glucose was 16.6 mmol/L ~ 22.4 mmol/L. She did not control her diet as snacks and candy were her favorites.
Upon admission, Miss Thilaga was given C-peptide test and her result indicated poor pancreatic function.
Therapy and Procedure
Stem Cell Therapy (Mesenchymal stem cells from the umbilical cord tissue: 6 IV injections)
Conditions after Stem Cell Therapy for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Two months after Miss Thilaga received stem cell therapy, her parents wrote to us:
We are really happy for the result of stem cell therapy. We took her to have her blood glucose test last week; her fasting blood glucose level has dropped to 5.7 mmol/L ~ 8.3 mmol/L, her postprandial blood glucose has dropped to 6.4 mmol/L ~10.1 mmol/L. Her insulin intake has reduced to 22 Units per day, including 14 Units at morning and 8 Units at evening. We have now adjusted her diet by cutting off her snacks and candy. We are really happy to see her condition improved, she can now grow up happily like other normal children….
