About Diabetes

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus), is a group of metabolic disorders that causes a person high blood glucose. The cause of diabetes depends on the type. For type 1 diabetes, it is partly inherited and then triggered by certain infections. For type 2 diabetes, lifestyle factors and genetics are the main causes. Weight loss, increased appetite, frequent urination and increased thirst are the typical symptoms of diabetes patients.

Treatment for Diabetes at ReLife

Available managements for diabetes are medications, insulin, lifestyle adjustment, a reasonable diet and regular exercises. Traditional Chinese Medicine has proven to be effective in improving diabetes general condition, strengthening the patient’s immune system and thus relieving diabetes symptoms. Stem cell therapy and gene therapy are new and effective treatment options for diabetes in the recent years.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy for iabetes

At ReLife, we apply allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from umbilical cord tissue in treating diabetes. MSCs have a great capacity for self-renewal while maintaining their multipotency. Numerous studies have demonstrated that human MSCs is capable of avoiding allorecognition, interfere with dendritic cell and T-cell function, and generate a local immunosuppressive microenvironment by secreting cytokines.[1]

The MSCs injected into patient’s blood can locate into injured pancreatic gland and repair it, by differentiating into islet cells and support tissue, so that normal insulin can be released and to regulate blood glucose well; MSCs injected can repair and regulate the patient’s immune system, so that the autoantibodies no longer attack the patient’s own islet cells, which prevent and cut off the fundamental pathogenesis of Diabetes Mellitus.

Patients may benefit from stem cell therapy from the following aspects:

  • Reducing or stopping the insulin dosage as well as medications;
  • Better control of blood glucose;
  • Preventing potential complications, such as diabetic foot, kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, etc;
  • A better immune function.

Cell-based Gene Therapy for Diabetes

Utilizing the molecular biology method, cell-based gene therapy is an innovative treatment method that implants the hepatocyte growth factor – HGF via stem cells into patient’s body. Via targeting the impaired pancreatic organ, it can continuously and stably repair the lesion tissue, so as to eliminate the inner factors that cause the disease and treat the diabetes.

Adipose tissue is an active endocrine and paracrine organ, which secretes various cytokines and biological factors. The regular secretion of adipose tissue regulates and controls the balance of energy in body, and also plays a role in the inflammation procedure. Adipose tissue is full of adipose stem cells, which have the ability to be easily cultivated in vitro and multiple differentiation capacity. It can effectively participate in the regenerative and repair procedures of both tissue and organs.

By taking advantage of adipose stem cell tropism, HGF will be carried to the impaired pancreatic region by adipose stem cells, enabling HGF continuously and stably effect and improve the blood circulation, as well as improve the survival rate and efficiency of adipose stem cells, which makes the treatment effect much better than single application of stem cell therapy. It plays a key role in repairing the injured pancreatic function, and promoting the balance of endocrinology system.

Enhanced Insulin Therapy for Diabetes

Based on the human body is an integrated whole, we combine the related risks and individuality together to design individualized, elaborate and comprehensive treatment plan for diabetes patients. Traditional Chinese medicine such as acupuncture and massage will be performed to improve patient’s general condition. Via intensive control of patient’s blood glucose by 5 stages via insulin pump, it can eliminate the insulin resistance gradually and repair the injured βcells. Based on the enhanced insulin therapy, allogeneic MSCs be applied will target to repair the injured βcells so as to achieve the best treatment effects.  Here we focus on long term regulation and control of blood glucose, bringing higher life quality for patients.

Chinese Medicine for Diabetes

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a green, safe and effective treatment method. Using acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion and natural therapy, TCM can active the positive Qi in human body, recover the islet function, improve the endocrine function as well as the general internal environment of the body, and thus recover the function of both Chong channel and Ren channel. By adjusting the endocrine system, it can recover the islet function, nourish the organs; thereby achieve the balance between Yin and Yang, Qi and Blood, as well as organs, which further benefit the recovery of pancreas.

Diabetes Treatment FAQ

Diabetes Treatment FAQ

How much does the diabetes treatment cost?
The estimate cost of diabetes treatment here ranges from ¥148,000RMB to ¥278,000RMB. The actual cost depends on each patient’s condition, degree of disease and complications, etc.

For patients who receive CIK cell therapy, it will cost more, about ¥15,000RMB for each IV injection of high dose of CIK cells. The actual cost depends on each patient’s condition, degree of disease and complications, etc.

The payment includes:

  1. Cellular therapy: high dose of IV injections of stem cells and/CIK cell injections
  2. Liposuction procedure regarding cell-based gene therapy
  3. Daily Medications (prepare and enhance the microenvironment in the patient’s pancreas and immune system to support and protect the coming stem cells, and promote the blood circulation, etc.)
  4. Supporting treatment. (for example, the traditional Chinese medicine treatments)
  5. Room fee for the patient AND for 1-2 accompanying family member(s).
  6. General medical services; Doctor’s visits, laboratory tests and image examinations etc

The payment does not include:

  1. Emergency medical treatment, stabilizing treatment, or treatment for unrelated illness
  2. Discharge medications
  3. Unexpected expenses such as prolonged time of hospitalization.
  4. Food.

How long should I stay in China for my treatment?
Usually, it takes about 2 weeks to finish the diabetes treatment at ReLife. However, it is recommended to arrive China on Monday or Tuesday so that we can start the first injection of stem cells at earliest convenience.

What cells do you use for diabetes treatment?
At ReLife, we usually apply allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells, autologous adipose-derived stem cells and CIK cells if needed for diabetes patients.

What’s the source of the stem cells?
ReLife uses adipose-derived stem cells from patient’s own adipose tissue via liposuction and allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells derived from umbilical cord tissue. For patients receiving CIK cell therapy, the cells are derived and cultivated from umbilical cord blood.
