Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of motor conditions which are non-contagious and non-progressive. It causes physical disability in patient’s development, mainly affects the body movements.

Causes

Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain. It can occur during the time from pregnancy to about age three. The typical causes include asphyxia before birth, hypoxia of the brain, intrauterine development, birth trauma, and complications in perinatal period or during childhood.

Symptoms

Cerebral palsy symptoms are diverse in each patient. The characteristic symptoms include abnormal muscle tone, spasticities, spasms, joint and bone deformities and contractures, unsteady gait, balance problems, and involuntary movements, etc. For patients who are able to walk, scissor walking and toe walking are noted.

Treatment for Cerebral Palsy in ReLife

Currently, there is no cure for cerebral palsy. Treatments are usually applied to improve or relieve symptoms, such as medications, rehabilitation therapy, surgeries as loosening tight muscles etc, as well as orthotics. Stem cell therapy nowadays has been applied in cerebral palsy treatment and is proved to be effective in many cases with positive treatment effects.

In ReLife, we provide a comprehensive treatment method for our cerebral palsy patients, integrating mesenchymal stem cell therapy, TCM and rehabilitation therapy, which improve patient’s symptoms better and have stronger and longer repairing function.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation for Cerebral Palsy

Mesenchymal stem cells – MSCs are multipotent stromal cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types. The MSCs we used at ReLife are obtained from the umbilical cord tissue. MSCs have a great capacity for self-renewal while maintaining their multipotency. MSCs have been seen to differentiate into neuron-like cells[1], it may help repairing the brain function of cerebral palsy patients with damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that human MSCs avoid allorecognition, interfere with dendritic cell and T-cell function, and generate a local immunosuppressive microenvironment by secreting cytokines [2], so there is no immune attack with application of MSCs.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

In TCM, CP is described as “five delayed”, “five soft”, “five spasticities”, “flaccidity syndrome or wei syndrome” and “dementia”. The treatment mechanism of TCM for cerebral palsy focuses on recovering the balance of patient’s body, strengthening the body resistance to eliminate pathogenic factor, adjusting the balance of Qi and Blood in the lesion area via local stimulation, thereby increase patient’s ability to fight with the disease and relax the muscle and increase the muscle strength, achieving a better health condition.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a green, safe and effective treatment method, which proposes treatment according to syndrome differentiation. Via acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, moxibustion, massage and natural therapy, TCM can improve the symptoms of cerebral patients gradually. Here in ReLife, we combine TCM treatment with mesenchymal stem cell therapy, which can activate the blood circulation to dissipate blood stasis, dredge the channels, restore patient’s consciousness and resuscitation, help patient be more conscious and alert.
